Prior to the world encounter Charlie Chaplin in the Little Tramp, the audiences got to know him in Making a Living (1914). This is a brief, silent comedy opening on February 2, with Chaplin playing Edgar English, a rogueish and harmless rogue. This was the film that jump started a legendary career directed by Henry Lehrman and produced by the Keystone Studios.
📚 Plot Summary
Chaplin is Edgar English a smooth-talking conman, who attempts to hustle money off strangers and seduce a young woman. A fight ensues comically when a competitor reporter (director Henry Lehrman) arrives with flowers.
The reporter then takes pictures of a car crash but in the process, he is assisting the injured, Edgar snatches his camera to the newspaper to take the photo as his own. This results into a typical slapstick pursuit with the keystone kopes. Although Chaplin is not the Tramp yet, his character already wears a top hat, cane, moustache, and oversized pants, which later became a precursor, as it was to come.
