Synopsis & Storyline

classic daffy duck cartoonDaffy Duck and the Dinosaur (1939): A Stone Age Duck Hunt Gone Wrong
Daffy Duck and the Dinosaur is a 1939 Merrie Melodies cartoon from Warner Bros., directed by Chuck Jones. It was the first Daffy Duck cartoon Jones ever directed, and it is also the last one to use the Vitaphone intro. The story is set in the Stone Age and features Daffy, a caveman named Casper (a caricature of comedian Jack Benny), and his pet Apatosaurus, Fido. Mel Blanc voices Daffy.
Casper and Fido go out to hunt ducks and spot Daffy. Daffy escapes using clever tricks, like dressing up as a traffic cop and painting a fake picture of himself on a rock. Then he earns Casper’s trust and sends him after a “giant rare duck” using fake billboards. The giant duck is really a balloon Daffy pumped up. Casper stabs it, it explodes, and all three end up in Heaven, where Daffy admits, “Maybe that wasn’t such a hot idea after all!”
This cartoon is important because it shows a new side of Daffy. Earlier directors made him wild and crazy, but Jones made him more thoughtful and sneaky. The film is in the public domain, and a restored version is on the Looney Tunes Golden Collection, Volume 3 DVD.
