Long before John Wayne became the face of Westerns, he starred in this rough early film, The Desert Trail (1935). It’s a short, fast-moving Western packed with shootouts, mix-ups, romance, and a full-on wilderness chase — all wrapped up in under an hour.
🐎 Plot Summary
Rodeo champion John Scott (John Wayne) is on cloud nine after getting his prize money — but the rodeo official is robbed and killed a few moments later. With no way to prove innocence, John and his talkative friend Kansas Charlie (Eddy Chandler) are compelled to bail out of the town.
While they are escaping and taking on new roles, they get shelter in a neighboring town where both men fall for the same lady: Anne Whitaker (Mary Kornman), who just happens to be the sister of one of the authentic murderers. When a robbery of the stagecoach brings back the past, John and Charlie are jailed once more — until an unlikely friend comes forward to give them a second chance in court.
It’s now a matter of racing against time to show that they are not guilty, to put the real criminal behind bars, and to get away from the gallows.
