🧟 White Zombie (1932) – The Birth of the Zombie Movie

There was White Zombie before The Walking Dead or Night of the Living Dead. This indie horror film of 1932 under the direction of the brothers Victor and Edward Halperin coined the genre of the zombies as it is today. According to eerie Haitian voodoo culture in the works of William Seabrook, it features horror star Bela Lugosi at his scariest.

Although some of the wooden acting was pinned by critics (except Lugosi), there was an overall eerie atmosphere in this film that made TV Guide rate it along with films like Vampyr. And here is the deal to it – it smoked in Cleveland and clunked in Montreal. Today? It is a free zone jewel that can be viewed anytime.

📚 The Plot: Hypnosis, Heartbreak & Haitian Voodoo

Neil and Madeleine are newly married and they go to Haiti to live the dream of the tropical life. But Charles Beaumont, a rich plantation owner desires Madeleine. He enlists desperately the services of “Murder” Legendre (Bela Lugosi) a puppet of voodoo who has a zombie army that runs his sugar mill.

Legendre does not merely kill Madeleine, he transforms her into a zombie with staring eyes, in whose hands he holds. On learning that his bride is not dead but undead, Neil joins forces with a local missionary to raid the battlement of Legendre. Is he to turn the curse back before the soul of Madeleine is lost permanently?
