Lady Frankenstein (1971) – Mad Science Gets a Sinister Makeover
Lady Frankenstein is a 1971 Italian horror movie by Mel Welles and part of the golden era of Eurocult cinema’s production. It is a crazy mix of Gothic horror, sci-fi, and sexual intrigue, with the veteran actor Joseph Cotten starring as the doomed Baron Frankenstein and the talented but ethically challenged Rosalba Neri (using the name Sara Bay) playing his daughter.
The film is infamous for flipping the Frankenstein narrative on its head — giving us not just a mad scientist, but a seductive female heir to the throne of reanimation.
🧟♂️ Plot Summary
The film opens as grave robbers deliver a fresh corpse to Baron Frankenstein and his assistant Dr. Marshall for their secret experiments in reanimation. Soon after, Frankenstein’s daughter Tania returns from medical school and insists on joining her father’s forbidden work.
Their latest experiment goes awry when the reanimated Monster kills the Baron and escapes. As the Monster roams the countryside in a vengeful rampage, Tania sets her sights on continuing the experiments — but with a twisted plan.
She seduces her father’s assistant and concocts a scheme to transplant his brain into the youthful body of their dim-witted servant, Thomas. The plan succeeds — until the Monster returns, and all hell breaks loose.
The villagers storm the castle, the Monster fights Marshall-in-Thomas’s body, and just when it seems Tania has won, her creation turns on her in one final act of betrayal.
