The Rink (1916), is one of the most popular short films of Charlie Chaplin since it embodies his physical comedy and roller skating prowess. This was the eighth film Chaplin participated in with Mutual Film Corporation that released it on December 4, 1916, which provided him with maximum creative freedom and freed his comic genius to flourish.
The Rink, starring Edna Purviance, Eric Campbell, Henry Bergman and Albert Austin, is an outstanding film in the early career period of Chaplin as a silent film director.
🧩 Plot Summary
Chaplin is a bumbling waiter who causes havoc in a restaurant at the expense of course of duty. However, at his lunch time, he changes to a fancy disguise as Sir Cecil Seltzer and goes to a roller skating rink. There, he exhibits his easy skating ability, attracts the women, and creates mayhem particularly on his suitor rival, Eric Campbell.
The comedy, as usual, is in perfect timing, slapstick humor and unbelievable smoothness on wheels by Chaplin.

🎶 Sound Version (1932)
In 1932, Chaplin sold his Mutual comedies (including The Rink) to Van Beuren Studios at a price of 10000 dollars. They inserted music by Gene Rodemich and Winston Sharples and sound effects and re-issued the movies on RKO Radio Pictures- without Chaplin consent. He did not have a legal right to stop the re-release, however, by doing so he made these classics known to a new generation.
