Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon (1943) Wartime Espionage Meets Classic Mystery

Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon (1943) is a very strange mix of a story about solving crimes and a war thriller. Basil Rathbone, the famous detective, is accompanied by Nigel Bruce, a doctor, Dr. Watson. This movie is the second in the series of films about the famous detective who is transported to the Europe of World War II and is pitted against the Nazis, Professor Moriarty (Lionel Atwill), his most famous foe, and all the rest.

The film is loosely based on the cipher of the dancing men of Arthur Conan Doyle, but it relies on the cipher of the dancing men that are well known. The remaining is an espionage and subterfuge story with high stakes as Holmes tries to save a brilliant scientist and his lethal creation.

Finding the Case The Case Unfolds: A Wartime Adaptation

Dr. Franz Tobel, a Swiss inventor, contacts Holmes and Watson to help him because he has a secret bomb sight that would alter the tide of the war. Nazi spies are already after Tobel and it is upon Holmes to outsmart them all including the notorious Professor Moriarty who has an interest in stealing the invention to Germany.

Holmes, to translate Tobel’s messages written in dancing men symbols, applies disguises to his old German bookseller, lascar sailor and Swiss scientist personas. Soon after Tobel’s kidnapping, Holmes has a hard time getting him before Moriarty, so he decides to intervene right away.

In the grand finale, Holmes meets Moriarty face to face, and their whole deadly rivalry, just like in the previous films, reaches its climax. The duel concludes with Holmes winning once more, this time at the Tower of London.
