🎬 About the Film
The Vagabond came out on July 10, 1916, and it was the third movie of Charlie under the Mutual Film Corporation contract and his 53rd overall. The character of the Tramp’s evolution is the main aspect of the film; the Tramp’s character is emotionally involved more than in the earlier films.
The film was remarkable for its visual storytelling and the emotions it portrayed so it also had the climactic scene where Edna, after being united with her family, understands that her real home is with the modest musician who saved her.

🎥 Chaplin’s Artistic Evolution
The Vagabond was a turning point in Chaplin’s career with his silent films. The slapstick technique was still very much the mainstay of the previous works but with this film the audience could sense the genuine romantic tension and the emotional subtleties, which would later be developed into the masterpieces The Kid and City Lights.
It’s one of Chaplin’s earliest examples of storytelling where the Tramp becomes more than a comic figure — he’s a gentle, heroic soul with real emotional stakes.
