Cyrano de Bergerac (Jose Ferrer) is a early-17 th -century France a brilliant poet, an expert sword fighter, and a brave man of honor. However, his big nose which is abnormally huge makes him think that no woman, in particular as well as his cousin Roxane could ever love him.
After Roxane tells Cyrano that she is in love with Christian (William Prince), a handsome, but tongue-tied guardsman, Cyrano volunteers to assist the best he can. He gives Christian his verse and writes love letters and even orates beneath the balcony of Roxane on his behalf.
As the love triangle plots, the lie becomes even more entrenched- a tragedy occurred in a war which takes the life of Christian. Cyrano, who is dying, eventually tells Roxane the truth in a very moving farewell years later but it is too late to build a relationship with her.
