It is hard to imagine a film noir that has as strong a beginning as D.O.A. (1949) by Rudolph Maté. It starts with a man approaching a police office to report a murder the one he committed. This is a very daring, inventive opening that predetermines the further reading of a ruthless murder mystery concerning death, fraud and revenge.

D.O.A. which features Edmond O Brien and Pamela Britton is currently in the public domain and identified by the library of congress as having cultural and historical value. It also launched upcoming stars such as Beverly Garland (who was known as Beverly Campbell) and Laurette Luez.

📚 Plot Summary

A small-town accountant and notary named Frank Bigelow (Edmond O’Brien) sets off on a small vacation to San Francisco in which he leaves behind his secretary and girlfriend Paula (Pamela Britton). In one of the hustling jazz clubs, The Fisherman, a stranger secretly spikes his drink.

The following day, Frank is sick and goes to see a doctor who gives him devastating news to him: he has eaten a glowing poison that has no cure. He has just a few days to live, yet Frank goes on a mad chase to find out by whom he was poisoned–why.

The hints bring him out of San Francisco to Los Angeles where he finds dubious business connections, stolen shipment of iridium and a line of murder. Frank discovers, with the aid of Paula, a lethal conspiracy in which he notarized an important piece of paper several months ago.

When the reality dawns, Frank and the perpetrator of the scheme engage in a life threatening shootout. At the conclusion of his story he is taken to the police station where he faints after completing his narration. His last word: “Paula.”
