🧩 Plot Summary
During the darkness of the Great Depression, down-on-his-lucky man (Godfrey “Smith” Parke (William Powell) in a city dump) is picked up by Irene Bullock (Carole Lombard), a sweet but airheaded heiress. To win a society scavenger hunt, she has to have a forgotten man.
Godfrey turns out to work as a butler to the Bullock family where he finds himself in an environment of wealthy dysfunction, strange individuals, and pandemonium. She falls in love with him very soon, although Godfrey insists on maintaining a professional relationship between them – and not telling anyone anything. Godfrey is introduced to be a man of the past, plans are misplaced and romance triumphs in the most unforeseen manner as the antics develop.
The outcome is a comedy of manners – and heart.
