Charlie is a clumsy, yet an intelligent helper at a bustling pawnshop that is owned by a mean pawnbroker (Henry Bergman). Charlie has to deal with a series of strange clients too, as he collides with a rival co-worker and courts the daughter of the pawnbroker (Edna Purviance) only to witness horrifyingly as Charlie hammers it to pieces.
The situation is dangerous when a fake client attempts to rob the pawnshop with gun point only to be outsmarted by Charlie and his slapstick courage in the most comic way.

🔊 Sound Version (1932 Re-release)
In 1932, Van Beuren Studios acquired the rights to Chaplin’s Mutual films, scored them and added sound effects, and made the releases through RKO. Although Chaplin did not have legal power over the re-releases, the sound added to the films made them popular among new viewers which were introduced to the director’s work.
