The Pawnshop (1916) – The Chaplin at his Slapstick Best.

A timepiece, a pawnshop, a lot of commotion, The Pawnshop (1916) is one of the most popular short films of Charlie Chaplin, and this movie reveals his genius in visual comedy at its best.

This was an unspoken masterpiece and the sixth movie that Chaplin directed in Mutual Film Company, which was an immediate hit with its rapid humor and witty jokes. It is a golden slice of vintage cinema that is almost 25 minutes long.

🎬 Plot Summary

Charlie is a clumsy, yet an intelligent helper at a bustling pawnshop that is owned by a mean pawnbroker (Henry Bergman). Charlie has to deal with a series of strange clients too, as he collides with a rival co-worker and courts the daughter of the pawnbroker (Edna Purviance) only to witness horrifyingly as Charlie hammers it to pieces.

The situation is dangerous when a fake client attempts to rob the pawnshop with gun point only to be outsmarted by Charlie and his slapstick courage in the most comic way.
