One A.M. (1916) -Charlie Chaplin vs. the Furniture.
One A.M. is an outstanding film performance by Charlie Chaplin which was released on August 7, 1916. This short film, unlike his other works, has almost no support features as the only actor is Chaplin in the best physical comedy. The 25-minute film, which was produced in his mutual film period, is a masterpiece in terms of using pantomime, timing and visual jokes.
It is his 54 th movie and the reason why it is special is that it consists of very few actors, it is creatively designed, and it includes a surreal humor which gives the viewer close-up view of the genius of Chaplin with very few actors and a little other actor in the sight.
🍸 Short But Wild: The Plot
The plot starts right after a night of partying. A rich youth (who is portrayed by Chaplin) comes into his mansionic house, evidently intoxicated and hardly capable of paying his taxi driver. He finds himself in the world with the key to his house, which he all the time had in his hand after stumbling with the car and subsequently the front door (he finally goes through a window).
Within, even a straightforward stroll to bed becomes a nightmare struggle with his mother of all furniture. Against him is a slippery floor, a spinning table, crazy stairs, a Murphy bed that simply will not co-operate, and a million other outrageous things. He confuses rugs and taxidermy with wild animals, fails to pour a drink, and ends up falling in the bathtub by pouring himself in an accident.
🎭 Cast
- Albert Austin- Taxi Driver (minor cameo)
- Albert Austin – Taxi Driver (brief cameo)
This was among the few films that Chaplin had; those with virtually just one actor. Albert Austin is briefly mentioned at the beginning only.
🎬 Why One A.M. Still Stuns
- Solo Genius: Chaplin is a man alone, the movie is conducted almost single-handedly, with no props but visual comedy.
- Creative Gags: Fighting a Murphy bed to falling on the rugs, there is not a single scene where there is no physical humor of high quality.
- Cinematic Innovation: The movie is a ballet of anarchy that is orchestrated like an exact dance.
- Public Domain Classic: The favorite among Chaplin admirers and movie scholars is now free.
