Kid Auto Races at Venice (1914) 1914 – Where It All Began

Charlie Chaplin was a pioneer in the history of movies before he became a world icon with the release of Kid Auto Races at Venice on February 7, 1914. This was a brief, rough improvisation movie that ushered in viewers to The Tramp – the recognizable Chaplin character in his bowler hat, cane and shuffle.

Shot in Venice, California during a summer children race in real life, this five-minute comedy was one of the first to break the fourth wall, as well as to employ real crowds as unwitting extras.

Plot Overview: The Tramp Steals the Show

The film is staged at one of the races of the Junior Vanderbilt Cup, a real life baby-cart race, where Chaplin was playing the role of an obstructive spectator. Over and over again, jumping in front of a newsreel camera, he stands in the way of the race, annoying the members of the camera crew and confusing the spectators.

His pranks are so innocent and funny: stealing to the camera, playing jokes, and attempting to shine the particular event. What is interesting about the film is that it is improvisational and Chaplin instinctively knows how to use his physicality in comedy.

  • Improv Comedy: Filmed in the streets and a true situation with unsuspecting people.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Advanced camera effects which recognized the process of movie-making.
  • Public Domain Gem: A fast, comic performer of a watch, and which nevertheless is still as good in 100 years as it was 100 years ago.
