Julie (Irene Dunne) hears an old song on a record-player- You Were Meant for Me- and begins to think of the life she had with Roger Adams ( Cary Grant ). The young romance between the couple leads to marriage and they go to Japan where a catastrophic earthquake makes them have a tragic miscarriage and Julie is infertile.
In their determination to begin a family, they adopt a baby girl, Trina and put their all in becoming parents though the finances are strained and Roger has lost his newspaper enterprise. Their relationship reaches a breaking point when another tragedy hits them once more when Trina dies untimely. The couple gets a second chance at adoption just in time, as the couple loses hope but this offer helps them regain their faith and salvage marriage.
