The year is 1854 and the West Point’s superintendent is no one but Robert E. Lee. Amongst his students are J.E.B. Stuart (Errol Flynn), George Custer (Ronald Reagan) and Carl Rader (Van Heflin). Rader secretly supports the abolitionist John Brown (Raymond Massey) whose militant activities in Kansas have created a national upheaval.
Upon graduation Stuart and Custer are sent to the Kansas Territory where Brown is raising chaos through violent raids. The young officers are also in a competition in getting the affection of Kit Carson Holliday (Olivia de Havilland) as they try to uphold order. As Brown plans to raid Harpers Ferry, the movie culminates in a dramatic climax where the mission of justice, fanatical, and rebellion are hard to distinguish.
