It proceeded to earn more than 3 million dollars making it a huge box office hit.

The cast of the movie includes Lon Chaney as Quasimodo, Patsy Ruth Miller as Esmeralda, Norman Kerry as Captain Phoebus, Nigel De Brulier as Claude Frollo, and Brandon Hurst as Jehan Frollo. The dramatic make-up and the physical work of Chaney solidified his image as The Man of a Thousand Faces and expressed the emotional force of silent acting.

Full Plot Summary

When Jehan orders Quasimodo to abduct the attractive Esmeralda, a Romani dancer, the attack does not go through as Captain Phoebus saves her. Quasimodo is caught and whipped in the town square, however, the kindness of Esmeralda is the one that ignites his love towards her by giving him some water.

In the meantime, Jehan, as well as Clopin, the king of beggars are envious of the love of Esmeralda towards Phoebus. During an expensive ball, the beauty of Esmeralda enthralls the audience when a disaster occurs when Jehan stabbed Phoebus and made Esmeralda look guilty. She is sentenced to death after being tortured into confessing.

Only in the nick of the time, Quasimodo saves her death and rings the cathedral bells as he takes her to safety and cites the right of sanctuary. But Jehan and Clopin direct a mob into storming Notre Dame with the aim of recovering her. When Esmeralda comes back to Phoebus his final bell sounds, Quasimodo dies at its side, and the sight of this match of death and love and sacrifice is a nightmare of solitude.

Genre and Key Themes

The movie is a historical romantic drama that has a great Gothic and horror touch. Isolation, compassion, and injustice are the prevailing themes of the story, and this theme mirrors the attitude of Victor Hugo towards the medieval society and human queerness.

The huge scenery of Paris in the 15 th century and the Notre Dame cathedral were revolutionaries in their time and shaped numerous historical movies. The film also toned down some of the aspects of Hugo novel – they changed the antagonist of the novel, Claude Frollo, into a sympathetic cleric, and even his brother, Jehan, into the antagonist, to avoid hurting the Church.

Why It’s Still Worth Watching

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) is a phenomenon of silent cinema one hundred years after its publication. The physical and emotional transformation of Lon Chaney created a new standard in character development and portrayal, which was mesmerizing. The huge cathedral set, elaborate costuming and innovative make-up effects of the film set the stage of Hollywood spectacle films to come.

In addition to its technical genius, the film remains timeless due to its timeless message, which is compassion towards the misfit, love versus hatred and prejudice, and the beauty of humankind despite the darkest times.

Universal also used this movie to build its reputation of classic monster and Gothic narratives, the foundations of further horror masterpieces such as The Phantom of the Opera (1925).
