McLintock! (1963) -A rough and tumble frontier bring-a-bang theatric.
McLintock! is an exceptional blending of slapstick comedy, romantic misunderstanding and Western drama, presenting a world-famous actor John Wayne and a red-headed and passionate Maureen O’Hara. The film was very vaguely inspired by Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, but the Wild West is turned into the venue for domestic quarrels, mud wrestling and political satire.
Guided by Andrew V. McLaglen and produced by Batjac Productions, the company owned by Wayne himself, McLintock! offers high energy comedy, gorgeous scenery and the typical Hollywood romance that audiences still enjoy decades after it was produced.
Plot Summary: Ranching, Romance and Ridiculousness.
George Washington or G.W. McLintock (John Wayne) is a prosperous cattle baron who owns all except his wife. His divorced wife, Katherine (Maureen O’Hara), comes back to town and wants to have a divorce and their daughter Becky (Stefanie Powers). McLintock is however not prepared to give up particularly after sparks begin to fly once more between them.
In the meantime, McLintock adopts a widow, Louise Warren (Yvonne De Carlo) and brings her children into his house where Devlin (Patrick Wayne) starts falling in love with Becky. All this family drama is set against the background of frontier politics, lawless townsfolk, inept government bureaucrats and one of the best mud fights in the history of films.
