⚓ Overview
The Admiral Was a Lady (1950) is a very nice post-World War II romantically comic film, directed by Albert S. Rogell, with Edmond O’Brien and Wanda Hendrix in the main roles. It takes place immediately after the war, and is a light comedy, a quirky tale of a down-to-earth Navy ensign, known as The Admiral, who is carried away into the weird lifestyle of four unemployed ex-GIs attempting to avoid responsibility and make a living in postwar America.
This comedy based on wartime reminiscence and romantics combined with screwball fizz was originally called Once Over Lightly (the name of one of the songs in the movie). The fact that it is played humourously and the repartees are quick and stinging make it one of the less known treasures of the sunny age of Hollywood laughter.
🎭 Plot Summary
Jean Madison (Wanda Hendrix) is an ensign in the recently discharged WAVES awaiting the reunion with her fiance. As she meets a club of former Army Air Corps veterans Jimmy Stevens (Edmond O Brien) and his scruffy friends Eddie ( Johnny Sands ) and his mates, Mike ( Steve Brodie ) and Ollie ( Richard Erdman ) her schemes go on a tangent.
The men identify themselves as the 52- 20 Club and are living on veteran unemployment checks and they are using their days to determine how they can get to do something other than work. They seduce Jean into their carefree life in a deserted plane factory with their home-made furniture and home-made luxury.
However, when the group is commissioned by jukebox tycoon Peter Pedigrew (Rudy Vallée) who wants Jean to keep Jean off her engagement, there is trouble when the former wife of Pedigrew is determined to marry him! Among comic plots, love misunderstandings and even a boxing match, Jimmy and Jean understand that they may fall in love with each other despite all the mess.

🕰️ Production & Historical Notes
The theme song of the movie, Once Over Lightly, and its initial promotion were based on the name of the working title. The alluring beauty of Wanda Hendrix was grossly hyped with the suggestive slogan:
“She taught these ex-G.I.s maneuvers they’ll never forget! … It’s zany in a wandafull sort of way!”
Produced by Roxbury Productions, the film captures the social mood of postwar America — where returning soldiers struggled to adapt to civilian life, often with humor and heart.
Filmed by Roxbury Productions, the movie reflects the social spirit of the postwar U.S. – when returning soldiers did not know how to fit in the civilian life, in most cases humorously and even heartedly.

💌 Why You Should Watch
The Admiral Was a Lady is ideal when you want to watch something that bears no relation to the modern world and a lot of 1950s coolness, good humor and nostalgia of the war time. Wanda Hendrix warmly and sassily, Edmond O Brien charismatically, the misfit camaraderie of the gang makes this movie warmly everlasting.
It is a comedy, one of those few postwar comedies that take the ridiculousness and mix it with the slightest emotion, which shows that even love may be discovered between lovable losers.
