🌌 Overview

The film Assignment Outer Space (1960) otherwise called Space Men in other countries is a typical Italian science-fiction movie directed by Antonio Margheriti and starring Rik Van Nutter and Gabriella Farinon.

It is located in the 21st century and describes the life of a courageous journalist who was sent to report about the life in an orbiting space station, only to realize that he is involved in a desperate attempt to rescue the Earth that is on the brink of destruction.

It was the first time as a director Margheriti demonstrated his ability to make fantastic imagery despite his tight budget. The movie was subsequently included in a well-known triple sci-fi feature, which included First Spaceship on Venus and The Mysterians.


🛰️ Plot Summary

Ray Peterson (Rik Van Nutter), an adventurous newspaper reporter, is tasked with writing a story in a high-tech space station in the year 2116. George, the commander, believes that he is a nuisance but is not supposed to interfere.

In an accident that occurs when an escobant vessel known as Alpha Two becomes rogue its photon generators turn on and start to release lethal heat radiations that are strong enough to burn the earth. When the panic sets in Peterson is willing to risk on a hazardous operation; board the ship, shut off the weapon, and get away before getting choked in deep space.

The 1960s sci-fi spirit prevails in the balance of scientific inquisitiveness, galactic threat, and human bravery in the movie – a portion of the man stepping into the world of the unknown.
