The Iron Mask (1929) is a landmark of goodbye to the silent period with the legendary Douglas Fairbanks playing the last silent role in the film. Under the leadership of Allan Dwan and the adaptation of the novel of Allan Dwan, The Vicomte de Bragalonne, it is a romantic adventure with love that spawns the dark mystery of the mysterious man in the iron mask.
The Iron Mask is a silent movie although it has short dialogue scenes, which makes the movie one of the first transitional sound movies. Fairbanks himself speaks two brief speeches, which represent a personal and a filmic farewell to the silent screen.
📚 Story Summary
The courageous leader of the Musketeers, D’Artagnan (Douglas Fairbanks), discovers a dreadful royal secret: the king of France has a twin brother, whom the throne secretly kept hidden. Wicked Cardinal Richelieu (Nigel De Brulier) and Count De Rochefort (Ullrich Haupt Sr.) plot to make the true heir languish in an iron mask.
Tragedy and triumph go hand in hand as D’Artagnan and his Musketeer friends, Athos, Porthos and Aramis, strive to uncover the truth about it and save the young heir. In an uncharacteristic film scene, the character of Fairbanks is killed and gets to reunite with his fellow soldiers who died in combat only to be taken to a higher adventure.
