Full Plot Summary
The 1937 film, Affairs of Cappy Ricks begins with the homecoming of Captain Cappy Ricks who is coming back to San Francisco, after a long voyage at sea and is about to settle down in his home and shipping company. Rather he sees it all in chaos and hardly familiar.
Mrs. Amanda Peasely, the domineering mother of Matt Peasely, who took over his house and redecorated it, got married in his absence to the daughter of Cappy (Ellen Peasely). Matt is a weak personality who is controlled by his mother and Ellen appears to be wretched in the marriage. Mrs. Peasely has settled down and rearranged the furniture and behaved as though she is the owner.
Even worse, Cappy discovers his other daughter Frankie is engaged to Waldo Bottomly Jr., the pampered, useless son of Cappy’s business rival. Waldo Jr. is everything Cappy despises—soft, privileged, and incompetent. Frankie’s true love, Bill Peck, is Cappy’s loyal friend and former romantic interest of hers, but she’s thrown him over for the wealthy Bottomly heir.
The business news is equally shocking. While Cappy was away, Mrs. Peasely and Waldo Bottomly Sr. bought out his late partner’s 51% stake in Cappy’s shipping company, giving them controlling interest. They announce plans to merge Cappy’s traditional sailing business with Bottomly’s modern “push-button” shipping operation, complete with electronic gadgets Cappy considers unreliable nonsense.
His favorite flagship will be scrapped and sold in only a month. All the things Cappy has created are destroyed his independence, his outmoded seamanship, his family heritage.
Cappy is furious, but cunning enough to come up with an ambitious plan with Bill Peck. He challenges Bill with the idea that he should be able to whip everyone to shape up and bring order. He takes the entire family aboard his ship including Ellen, Matt, Mrs. Peasely, and Frankie claiming that it would be a nice cruise.
Half a world away, 300 miles out of the regular shipping routes, Cappy shows what is really afoot: he is going to run away with all hands to an uninhabited coral reef to teach them how to take care of themselves and divide everyone of their spoiled, modernized ways. He desires them to also put off civilization a bit and forget about skills and essential character.
The team is abandoned on the island where they have to construct shelter, locate food and work in collaboration without servants and contemporary conveniences. The spoiled Mrs. Peasely pricks all the time, and weak Matt is not able to cope with the labor. Frankie starts to understand the real character of Waldo Jr.- he is a coward and powerless in any serious situation.
In the meantime, Bill Peck demonstrates that he is competent, enterprising, and courageous, and this makes Frankie remember that she loved him. These challenges and perils of the life on the island bring out the real character of everybody.
What the family is not aware of is that Cappy has been in contact with civilization the whole time by radio. The lessons are real but the marooning is totally under control.
Captain Braddock finally comes in his contemporary electronic vessel to save them. However, a fierce storm attacks and everything in Braddock, all the push-button technology fails. Cappy, with his old-fashioned seamanship, and his familiarity with wind and sail, is the only one who can steer them through them all.
The experience changes all of them. Mrs. Peasely accepts to vacate the house of Cappy. The merger of the business is aborted and Cappy gets back his shipping business. Frankie ends up her engagement to a worthless person, Waldo Jr. and gets back with her true love, Bill Peck.
At the end of the movie, things are put back in order, the family is joined once again under the wise care of Cappy, and everybody has come to understand that a real convenience could not substitute true personality, prowess, and self-sufficiency.

Affairs of Cappy Ricks (1937) is an enjoyable, but expected B-comedy that looks much better due to the way Walter Brennan acted in it.
- Acting: Walter Brennan is a fantastic Cappy, rough and lovable in his usual grumpy but wise role. Georgia Caine makes the perfect foil as the overpowering Mrs. Peasely. This is a fairly traditional role of Mary Brian and Lyle Talbo as the young romantic characters. Frank Shields is good at playing a cowardly and spoiled Waldo Jr.
- Direction and pacing: Ralph Staub maintains the 61 minutes of the movie moving rapidly, without spending too much time on any scene. It has a workmanlike direction, which is characteristic of the efficient B-movie production by Republic.
- Story: It is a simple, formulaic story, a version of The Taming of the Shrew and dozens of other stories about being shipwrecked and having to survive on the deserted island. The marooning plan of the island is ridiculous but it was gambled with sufficient zeal to succeed. The denouement of the storyline knits all the threads in, maybe too snug.
- Values of production: Being a Republic B-movie, the production is decent and simple. The sets are minimalistic and the island resembles a Hollywood backlot extremely suspiciously, however, this does not hurt the comedy particularly hard.
- Availability problems: The film is in the public domain, not subject to renewal of its copyright, and therefore there exist uncountably bad substandard video and DVD copies. A lot of them are poorly edited, grainy, and are based on patched-up prints. The best quality of transfer should be pursued by the viewers.
