Revisit the Comedy Classic of the Three Stooges Public Domain

Brideless Groom (1947), is currently one of the most legendary short films produced ever by the Columbia Pictures company with the popular slapstick trio of 3 stooges. Being the 101st installment in their long-running series of comedy shorts, this movie is indicative of the anarchic nature, physical humor, and ridiculous situations that characterized the long-lasting popularity of the Stooges.

Best of all? Brideless Groom is in the public domain and so anyone can enjoy it freely and stream it or even download it.

Summary of the plot: A Race To Riches and Marriage

In Brideless Groom, Shemp Howard is a harried voice coach, who is having trouble teaching his tone-deaf student Miss Dinkelmeyer (portrayed by Dee Green). Larry Fine is playing piano and Moe Howard is coming and going and even when Shemp goes with him he has already run out of patience, until Moe tells him that his uncle has died, leaving him an inheritance of a half-million dollars. But there is a condition – Shemp must get married within the 48 hours to get the money.

Panic strikes as Shemp goes running through his black book, offering himself to all of his old girlfriends he can encounter. Regrettably, it all backfires, resulting in rejection and physical abuse and mayhem including an unforgettably comical fight with the no nonsense Miss Hopkins (Christine McIntyre) that leaves Shemp battered and bruised.

Shemp eventually finds himself engaged with Miss Dinkelmeyer none the less. As time elapses, he, Moe and Larry are hurried to the Justice of the Peace (Emil Sitka) to close the deal. But the word of Shemp’s lottery is quickly circulated–in no very long time you will see all the women he addresses in court there to take their share of the cake. Then there is a frenzied fight of jealous lovers, slaps, and punches–as in Three Stooges heaven.

Eventually, Shemp, half awake, marries Miss Dinkelmeyer in good time. His horror-stricken response at the moment he wakes up and discovers what has occurred makes the short a flawless comedic climax.

Stooges Cast Casting and Comedic Highlights

  • Herself, poor Shemp Howard, the bachelor.
  • Larry Fine as musical companion of Shemp.
  • Moe Howard the voice of sanity (and violence).
  • Dee Green as Miss Dinkelmeyer, the obnoxious and tone-deaf student.
  • The no-nonsense neighbor, Miss Hopkins, was played by Christine McIntyre.
  • Emil Sitka playing Justice of the Peace – uttering his legendary scene, Hold hands, you lovebirds!

It is particularly remembered in connection with the performance of Sitka, and the quote he made is now a part of the pop culture, even his tombstones.

Impact of the culture and footprint of bridal groom

Brideless Groom is not some flim-flam Three Stooges short, but a keystone to the history of slapstick. The plot of the film, which is based on a man who has to get married to get an inheritance, is inspired by Seven Chances, a classic by Buster Keaton made in 1925, and was later repeated in 1999 in The Bachelor with Chris O’Donnell playing the main role. Clyde Bruckman who wrote Seven Chances and Brideless Groom, can be considered an inheritor of the films due to common creative DNA.

Another unexpected pop culture inclusion was a scene in which Emil Sitka is hit with a birdcage in Pulp Fiction (1994) by Quentin Tarantino, thus ensuring that the Stooges have a role in the generations of filmmakers.

Public Domain Status: Why It Matters

Brideless Groom is one of four Three Stooge shorts released in the 1960s which entered the public domain because of the lapse of time. That is why it is freely distributable, therefore it can be found often on cheap CD collections and streaming sites.

The other public domain Three Stooges shorts include:

  • Disorder in the Court
  • Malice in the Palace
  • Sing a Song of Six Pants

Consequently, Brideless Groom has been easy to access and people have always enjoyed the movie without any legal or financial restrictions.

Modern Releases & Colorized Versions

n 2005, Legend Films repackaged Brideless Groom in color, tape of a DVD collection consisting of wraparound commentary by The Film Crew. In 2007, Sony/Columbia also issued a digitally fixed and colorized version as part of the Hapless Half-Wits set, bringing the short to new generations of audiences, with its charm of slapstick in new and updated color and form.
