🎬 Overview
The Midnight Girl (1925) is an epoch-making American silent drama in terms of visuals and depicts Béla Lugosi in a relatively early role, which was a long time before he gained fame for horror. The picture plunges into ambition, music, and tangled love affairs, all portrayed in the dazzling but also harsh atmosphere of opera houses and nightlife.
🌙 Plot Summary
Nicholas Harmon (Béla Lugosi), a wealthy and influential patron of music, is obsessed with his mistress Nina, an opera singer whose talent is starting to fade. When Harmon’s stepson Don – an idealistic young orchestra conductor – rejects the shallow love of a high-society woman, he clashes with his stepfather and leaves to pursue his career independently.
Enter Anna (Lila Lee), a gifted singer from Russia, new to America and full of dreams. Don discovers her and helps launch her singing career. Soon, she becomes the sensational “Midnight Girl” in a popular nightclub.
The moment Harmon spots Anna, he becomes madly in love with her. He deceives her to return to his apartment, but the situation goes wrong when he attempts to rape her. In terror, Anna shoots a gun — and unfortunately, Nina, who was in the vicinity and hiding, gets hit by the bullet.
Ultimately, Harmon acknowledges his genuine affection for Nina and opts for love besides lust. On the other hand, Don and Anna are blessed with their own happy ending, Anna’s opera stardom being the highest peak of her success.
