Mud and Sand (1922) is a silent comedy movie which features the legendary name of Stan Laurel way before he became half the duo of one of the most famous comedies Laurel and Hardy.
The film is directed by Gilbert M. Anderson and it is a romantic parody of Blood and Sand, a successful romantic movie by Rudolph Valentino (1922).
This movie is a masterpiece of combining humor, satire, and slapstick, a real treasure of the early American movie.
🎭 Plot Summary
Stan Laurel takes the role of Rhubarb Vaseline, a hopeful bullfighter with the dreams of fame and love. Oh, he is determined to get back his lover, and so he gets into the risky bull fighting arena- but matters soon get out of hand in a laughable manner.
One of the most memorable endings of a silent movie, the dancer Pavaloosky also strikes back by throwing a concealed brick at her after a fight with the most dangerous bull in Spain.
The film ends with a witty moral:
“If you want to live long — and be happy — cut out the bull!”
