Night of the Living Dead (1968) is basically the zombie movie that flipped the whole genre on its head. Directed by George A. Romero, this cult classic is now in HD and totally free to watch or download since it’s in the public domain.
Night of the Living Dead (1968): The Zombie Film That Started Everything
Romero’s Night of the Living Dead might’ve been made on a tiny budget, but it still changed horror forever. The movie cost barely $114,000 to make and ended up earning over $30 million worldwide — wild, right? It pulled zombies straight into mainstream pop culture and became a global hit without even trying.
The action takes place in rural Pennsylvania where the story describes an ugly battle to survive as ghouls that feed on humans surround a farmhouse. This is a landmark independent film which used Duane Jones in a breakthrough performance and which was bold in both the story and in its casting, and now is in the public domain.
🧟 Plot Summary
On their way to the grave of their father in a remote cemetery, Barbara and her brother Johnny drive, when they are attacked by some mysterious character. Johnny is killed, and Barbra runs to an remote farmhouse where she meets Ben a composed and competent survivor.
The more of the undead that surround the house, the more tensions build amongst a group of strangers in search of refuge in the cellar. These include the Coopers whose daughter has been bitten. The situation grows out of control when escapes are not possible and the zombies focus on the victims.
The survivors drop, one by one, not to the undead only, but also to fright, distrust and bloodshed. As part of a terrifying final twist, Ben manages to survive the night just to be cursedly confused with a zombie by a rescue posse.

Why This Movie Matters
- Genre Game-Changer: Night of the Living Dead flipped horror — and zombie flicks in general — on its head. Tons of later films, shows, and books trace their inspiration back to this one.
- Real Talk on Society: Casting a Black actor, Duane Jones, as the main lead back then was unheard of — and that choice, plus the shock-ending, gives the movie a deeper social edge.
- Public Domain Gem: Because of a copyright goof, this horror masterpiece is now totally free to watch, share, or even re-edit — which is rare for a film this iconic.
