The City of the Dead (1960), also referred to as Horror Hotel in the United States, is a gothic British horror film, which features Christopher Lee and Venetia Stevenson. The novel is set in a foggy New England village, where ancient witchcraft, sacrifice of people and strange rituals remained throughout centuries. This was produced in the U.K., but actors needed to speak American accents in order to sound authentic.
The movie, which shocks the viewer with the killing of its main protagonist midway through, came out only a few months after Psycho, which gave the film a shocking and provocative narrative of its era. It is now in the public domain and is now being appreciated as an underestimated treasure of early 1960s horror.
📖 Plot Overview
Nan Barlow, a college student interested in New England witchcraft, is suggested by her professor, Alan Driscoll (Christopher Lee), to go to the village of Whitewood to research it. She coincides to the foreboding Raven Inn that is run by the enigmatic Mrs. Newless.
Although there are warnings and the ever-growing fog, Nan explores the creepy basement of the place where they stay and disappears into air. With the help of her brother and boyfriend, she can trace back her steps and find a dark past about a witch called Elizabeth Selwyn burnt at the stake in 1692. However, death did not finish her…
Whitewood’s chilling secret? To preserve their contract with Lucifer, the undead cult has to feed on a virgin every year.
