B-Movie Ci-Fi Glory The Phantom Creeps (1939) – Lugosi Unleashed
The Phantom Creeps (1939) can be looked on as a pure old-school sci-fi fun in case of the mood. Bela Lugosi plays the cheesily villainous role of the rogue scientist, Dr. Zorka; a man with robots, invisibility belts, killer spiders, and a desire to kill the human race. It is a 12-part serial that is full of crazy inventions, undercover agents, explosions and some really bizarre scenes.
The Phantom Creeps, the last serial that featured Lugosi to be released by Universal Pictures, is his swansong, and he leaves behind him a series of chewed scenes reminiscent of a villain whose sole purpose was to monologue. The film was shot with a low budget, however, over the decades the movie has become a cult classic and even inspired the iconic scrolling text introduction of Star Wars.
