In this historical adventure full of treachery, hidden treasures, and royal intrigues, the scheming mariner, Captain Kidd, played by Charles Laughton, is the main character, he brings along the support of Randolph Scott and John Carradine, the Captain Kidd is mixing up the classic swashbuckling adventure and love plot.
The film was initially published by United Artists but has since passed into the public domain and continues to be a popular film with pirate film fans. Although the historical basis of the movie cannot be deemed as completely historical, its opulent production, alluring role playing, and adventurous nature remain entertaining.
🧭 Plot Summary
In 1699, a notorious pirate known as William Kidd, (Charles Laughton) persuades King William III (Henry Daniell) that he is a reformed man and deserves to lead a royal expedition. His mission? Escort the Quedagh Merchant, a vessel that brings the ambassador of England and his daughter Lady Anne (Barbara Britton), with her, and a huge treasure, safely back to London.
Hiring the inmate crew, one of whom is the enigmatic Adam Mercy (Randolph Scott), Kidd goes out with murder in mind. He plays the ambassador to change the ship, after which he destroys the original ship. Shortly after, Mercy turns out to be the son of a sea captain that had been swindled by Kidd.
This trip turns out to be a series of conspiracies, betrayal, and friends turn into enemies as the betrayal starting with Kidd himself starts to backfire. In a last twist, Mercy and Lady Anne run away revealing crimes of Kidd in the presence of King and bringing the cruel pirate to the law.
