Full Plot Summary

Daniel Boone, Trail Blazer 1956 film starts at the violent frontier of Kentucky in 1775, in the American War of Independence. Daniel Boone has escorting along a wagon train of settlers in the wilderness to find a new home at Boonesborough, a fort at the disputed site long used by the Shawnee.

There Boone lives with his wife Rebecca and children: Susannah, Jemima, Israel and James and his brother Squire Boone. The small town is attempting to construct cabins, and plant crops and cut out a quiet life, yet they are on all sides besieged by the threats of British officers, the aggressive elements amongst the tribes, and the ambitious white renegades that are making money out of the fact that the battle is raging on.

Some of the troublemakers are a French-sided renegade and translator, Simon Girty, who switches between the world of the whites and the Native world. Gity plays information in order to persuade Shawnee Chief Blackfish that Boone and the settlers have not come to share the land but to kill his people and take everything away. He circulates rumors that Boone is going to pre-empt, making every move the settlers make an indication of ill intentions.

Boone is an experienced man dealing with Native tribes and would prefer dialogue and coexistence. He is convinced that having an opportunity to face Blackfish face-to-face, he will be able to clarify all misconceptions and find a truce that will save both the settlers and Shawnee. He instructs hot-headed men in the fort on not shooting first and that any treaty should not be violated.

Not all people concur inside Boonesborough. There are some settlers who view everyone among the Native people as a savage and demand a military retaliation. Others such as the Callaway family- Andy Callaway and his son Faron Callaway are torn between fear and the more relaxed leadership of Boone. Faron is an excellent young frontiersman with admiration towards Boone and who frequently rides with his mentor on reconnoitering missions.

There is tension at the time Shawnee scouts are spotted in the fort. Boone is eager to parley, but a single gunshot by one of the trigger-happy settlers kills at least one of the warriors in a small Shawnee group, and dashes the already shaky hope of a peace. Boone is also infuriated by the fact that he realizes that the shot will be said to be filled with treachery and reach the ears of Blackfish faster than any explanation.

Gity, having his chance, informs Blackfish that this is the real intentions of Boone. He gives an image of the settlers as non-combatants who are talking peace yet, they are plotting a massacre. Cornered, Blackfish starts planning a war party against Boonesborough so they can chase them away before they become too powerful.

When Shawnee surround their target, life in the fort is a tedious affair of terror, rationing and night watches. Boone makes one final attempt to contact Blackfish and goes out to organize a council. Mutual respect is demonstrated at times: Blackfish is not an antagonist of a cartoon that exists, but a leader who would do all the things he has to save his people with the information he can retrieve. Nevertheless, it is impossible to fully trust Gity due to his influence and the violence of the settlers who happened previously.

Raids, skirmishes, and ambushes come after. In one sequence, a wagon of children is ambushed and Boone and his men are forced to run through the fire and arrows to save them. The life of frontier Boone fantasized about becomes a sequence of desperate attempts to defend themselves, with Boonesborough being attacked by more than just one of the direct attacks.

In these confrontations family loyalty is paramount. The sons of Boone Israel and James, desire to fight with their father, his daughters were always under the threat of being captured, which is also a reflection of real historical moments when the daughters of Boone themselves were briefly seized by the raiders of Native Americans. Rebecca Boone and the other ladies are more likely to take care of the injured, maintain the community running, and insist on survival but not blind hate.

Faron Callaway, who seems to serve largely as an intermediary between the generation of Boone and the settlers of the newer generation, is shown to be a man who proves himself in battle and scouting on more than one occasion. His bravery wins the trust of Boone and it is an indication that a new breed of men will overtake the frontiers at a later time.

When both sides continue to gather casualties, Boone eventually has an avenue through which to expose the manipulations of Girty. It can include either capturing Gity or initiating a confrontation in the presence of Blackfish where the viewer learns how the renegade has distorted messages to continue with the war. As soon as the role of Gity is disclosed, part of the enmity between Blackfish and Boone starts to wear off, although the harm will probably not be fully repaired.

The movie culminates in a giant scale raid on Boonesborough: Shawnee warrior and British-allied forces do a straight charge on the fort, as the settlers defend against the onslaught using log walls and firing slits. The cannon and muskets are firing, the arrows are flying, and the place is almost being stormed.

A combination of tactical management, brute force and the loyalty of his family and allies helps Boone to keep the fort. The assailants ultimately withdraw finding out that Boonesborough is not going to fall easily. Boone and his people are battered but still standing at the end of the film, with their homes standing, and some idea that some uneasy peace is now possible in Kentucky.

Genre and Key Themes

Daniel Boone, Trail Blazer is a historical adventure western and biographical film, produced in the mid-1950s to cash in on the popularity of frontier heroes in movies such as Disney’s Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier.

Key themes include:

Western frontier culture and frontier heroism and leadership.
Boone is described as the best frontier leader, courageous, loyal and devoted to his family and the settlers he takes care of. He is continually struggling to maintain defense without implicating all Native people despite pressure.

Poor communication and corruption.
Not a mere hatred is a big motivator of conflict, but rather misinformation. The deception and partiality of Simon Gentry about what Boone wants causes Blackfish to engage in war and make negotiation opportunities a blood bath.

Settlers vs. Native Americans (1950s prism).
The movie is representative of the sentiment in the era. It tries to make Blackfish a proud and rational leader, who has been mislead, yet it still puts the view of the settlers at the heart of it, and some of the outdated stereotypes are used. This context should remain in the mind of the modern viewers.

Community and family frontier.
The story always revolves around Boone family. The movie reveals their daily life of hard work, building, hunting, and taking care of the ill, in addition to the grandiose battles of the frontier, a point that the frontier was as much about survival as heroism.

Mythological creation and national identity.
Republic Pictures, having published Daniel Boone, Trail Blazer in the 1950s western boom, contributed to a greater American myth of the noble pioneer who is conquering the wild and resisting not only the Redcoats but also the hostile tribes.

Movie Review

Being a B-western of the 1950s, Daniel Boone, Trail Blazer 1956 film is a humble yet interesting version of the legend of Daniel Boone. It lacks the grandeur and refinement of the great-studio battles of the day, though it provides no little wild landscape, siege scenes, frontier scenes of colorful character in the rough.

Bruce Bennett performs a low-key role of Daniel Boone as a steady actor. He is a little less rugged and more easy-going than most real frontiersmen must have been, but his collected air and physical stature suit the heroic tone of the film. Almost unrecognizable under costume and make-up, Lon Chaney Jr. helps to endow Blackfish with some weight that the Shawnee chief has something to be dignified and complicated even within the framework of the script.

Some young vibrancy is added by country singer Faron Young in the role of Faron Callaway and the Boone family actors assist in selling the concept of a real town under fire. The frontier fort sets and Mexican sets passably well as the Kentucky backwoods, and the Trucolor cinematography lends the movie a cozy, faintly tinted appearance that hearkens back to the middle of the 50s western films.

Some weaknesses have been identified by critics and fans. The dialogue in the script is clichéd and antique, and the speeches are more about 1950s TV westerns than the frontier life of the 18 th century. The financial limitations are reflected in the number of people in crowds and in the battle scenes, particularly against such bigger-budgeted Disney projects at the time.

Nevertheless, being a public domain movie and free classic movie, Daniel Boone, Trail Blazer full movie is worth watching when one is a fan of the western films, Daniel Boone lovers or simply in the curiosity how the Hollywood of the 1950s managed to transform historical characters into a legend of the frontier. It has a blend of action, family drama and frontier politics packed into a tight package of 76 minutes which can be streamed or downloaded easily.
