Full Plot Summary

Whistle Stop 1946 movie is set in Ashbury, a depressed town in the form of a whistle stop where people come and go but do not get out.

The woman who had traveled to Chicago two years ago to search for wealth and beauty returns home with a mink coat and an expensive cigarette case. The sudden appearance of her character brings back memories of the previous conflict between Kenny Veech and Lew Lentz who were former enemies.

Kenny takes his time hanging around bars and playing cards and half-dating one of the local waitresses called Fran despite still being bitter about the loss of Mary. Lew owns the most glamorous joint in town and he is effortlessly dangerous. Kenny is jealous as he watches Mary and Lew together at his club.

Gitlo, a former boxer who is no longer tough, but works in the bar at the establishment of Lew, does see Kenny angry, but he himself hates his boss. Gitlo feels Lew has swindled him and does not view him as a friend, but as an employee. Gitlo realizes an opportunity of exacting revenge and profiting, which makes him approach Kenny with a dangerous proposition.

Lew is a local sponsor who has funded a local fair every year, and Lew skims a lot of cash off him, he offers Gitlo an idea to rob Lew of approximately $15000, kill him at the train station on his way out of town, and make it seem like he just disappeared on his trip. In case there is no body, Mary and all others will think that Lew left her and the town.

Kenny initially refuses. He is not a natural killer, even with his rough exterior, and is still hanging on to Mary. However, when Mary, who is fed up with life in small towns and Kenny and his unambitiousness make it known that she is leaving Ashbury once again, the fear of losing Mary drives him into the plan of Gitlo.

During the fair, Gitlo even plants a gun into the pocket of Kenny, which would prepare him to the ambush. Still protecting Kenny under the anger Mary who is suspicious of both the behavior of the men notices the move. She intentionally retains Kenny by her side and postpones him till the train of Lew has gone. When Kenny can take any action, Lew is already heading out of town and the murder is prevented silently.

Thereafter, Mary detaches herself with Kenny. She goes to another hotel and does not want to see him since she is tired of his continual wandering and his criminal behaviour. Lew, seeing his time, drives his attentions. Kenny, infuriate, collides with Lew in the streets and the two men exchange insults and hits about Mary.

At a less dramatic time Kenny and Mary end up having an honest conversation. She confesses that she is still in love with him despite all these, but she must know that he will mature and become responsible. Kenny promises to change. He also gives up lazing about and gets a job with the railroad which is a true stride in the right direction that makes Mary happy and the couple has a hope at least temporarily.

Lew, however, is not done. He feels insulted by the act of being deceived and humiliated, so he decides to get even with Kenny and Gitlo by setting them up to commit a murder. When a murder takes place, Lew leaks information to the police that Kenny and Gitlo are engaged in the murder. The police arrive causing the two men to run away.

During a frenzied pursuit, Kenny is shot in a part of the arm by police bullets as he and Gitlo scramble out of town and board a freight train heading off to Detroit. Gitlo takes Kenny to the city where the wounded Kenny is taken to Estelle which is an old friend of his and requests her to conceal and nurse Kenny to health.

Gitlo is determined to make the place clean and score his point, so he goes back to Ashbury by himself. He informs Mary where Kenny is hiding to go see him and then proceed to search Lew. The two men engage in a fight and the fight becomes fatal. Lew shoots Gitlo, but the old fighter applies his last strength and strangles Lew with his death.

On his deathbed, Gitlo tells the police that he and Lew had framed Kenny. This exonerates Kenny of the murder case. At the same time, Mary goes to Detroit, where Kenny is recuperating because of his wound on the arm, and brings him back into her life.

The final scene of the film shows Mary and Kenny walking together with their bruises but still alive. The future remains unknown but they have endured the plans of Lew and their own poor decisions and the film indicates that they might finally have an opportunity of something resembling a happily ever after.

Genre and Key Themes

Whistle Stop is a crime noir and drama, based in a declining railroad town whose imaginations of escape are turned into a feeling of envy and minor felony.

Key themes include:

Stagnation and escape in small towns.
Ashbury is a whistle stop place where the trains pass, but there is no real opportunity. Mary goes out to find glamour in Chicago and comes home disappointed; Kenny talks much about making it but loses his trail.

Jealousy and doomed romance
The main idea of the plot is a love triangle: Mary, Kenny, and Lew. Furthermore, Kenny is incapable of letting Mary go and the possessive nature of Lew adds to the violence in the plot rather than the simple greed of money.

Fidelity, treachery and gray areas.
The intention by Gitlo to rob and murder Lew is based on a perverted justice. He is a traitor and finally a sort of avenger who dies to bring out the lies of Lew and clear Kenny of his innocence.

Working‑class noir
Other slick urban noirs feature bartenders, small time gamblers, rail workers and shopkeepers as the setting of noir tension is revealed, whereas Whistle Stop takes place in much more rural areas where a big city gangster image is not a concern.

The black-and-white photography, the interior of the bars, the train yards, and the night streets all seem to contribute to the traditional film noir appearance, although the film itself is of small size compared to some studio noirs at the time.

Movie Review

The 1946 film Whistle Stop is currently remembered as a source of the early exposure of Ava Gardner and a decent, but not highest, example of film noir. It has been successfully judged by its critics then and since as having its strong points and limitations.

The positive aspect brings an enjoyable atmosphere to the current situation. The small-town noir setting which Leonides Moguy and Russell Metty created presents an authentic experience through its use of narrow spaces and shadowy drinking establishments and wet streets. The presence of whistles and tracks and stations creates a continuous movement through the story while the characters remain in their inactive state.

The outstanding personage is Mary, played by Ava Gardner. She carries a lot of hardness and vulnerability with her that she is not only a femme fatale but also sincerely divided into love and her survival. Kenny, played by George Raft is more controversial. His emotionally thin style is appealing to some viewers as befitting a tired gambler but some, including the screenwriter Philip Yordan himself, said that a younger, livelier actor could have made the love story seem more believable.

Victor McLaglen invests Gitlo with a certain gritty appeal and pathos as a fighter who has slipped into crime and Tom Conway as a slick, a little greasy Lew Lentz provides a good noir antagonist. The small-town characters and background Veech family are not overloaded with details.

On the narrative side, the movie may seem somewhat hasty and melodramatic, particularly in the abrupt change of robbery story to manslaughter frame-up and back to love. Yordan himself on the matter claimed to have just adapted a fragment of a more explicit novel by Maritta Wolff, and constructed his own streamlined noir novel therein. Consequently, certain emotional twists occur within a short time span, yet the fundamental storyline temptation, betrayal, flight, sacrifice, comes into focus.

To a contemporary viewer finding Whistle Stop in its entirety as a free classic movie and a public domain movie on other websites like Internet Archive or You Tube, the movie, although not a masterpiece, is a noir of good mood, pleasant small-town setting, and good Ava Gardner scenes and a satisfying, tragic climax.
