👾 An Intergalactic Tale of Love, Lasers & Lobsters
Teenagers from Outer Space, which was released in 1959, is full of low-budget charm and it mixes teenage angst, alien invaders, and a giant lobster monster under the serious direction of an indie auteur, Tom Graeff. With its low-budget of $14,000, the movie has established a cult fan base due to its strange heartedness and its eccentric filmmaking. It is currently in the open source, so it is an ideal example of retro science fiction running on the rails and off.
🛸 Plot Breakdown Love vs. the Lobster Monster
One of the spaceships lands on the earth, in search of another planet to breed gargons; ugly creatures that breathe air and look like lobsters. But other aliens are not in agreement with the plan. A young alien named Derek (David Love) is opposed to this when he discovers that an intelligent life exists on earth. This rebellious act places him in conflict with Thor (Bryan Grant) who is also a member of the crew and who is keen on vaporizing anyone who stands on his way and even a harmless dog by the name Sparky.
Derek flees, where he encounters an Earth girl, Betty Morgan (Dawn Bender), a good person who assists him to escape and cautions him of the alien invasion. When the monstrous gargon starts to swell the town like a balloon, Derek and Betty attempt to prevent the invasion with the assistance of a faulty ray gun and a few conveniently placed power lines.
At the bitter-sweet ending of the film, Derek gives up his life to annihilate the oncoming alien fleet, proclaiming Earth his real home.

🎬 Why This Film Still Matters
Teenagers from Outer Space is an interesting artifact of 1950s science-fiction filmmaking, more serious than sensational, and more imaginative than its limited financial means may enable it to be. Its own special effects, melodramatic performance and emotional script make it completely attractive. The movie has since become a cult film on cult shows such as Mystery science theater 3000 as well as in Elvira movie Macabre and is now a living legend as a kitchy gem of the atomic era.
