Scarlet Street (1945): Fritz Lang Paints a Noir Nightmare
Scarlet Street is honestly such a wild little movie. Lang mixes noir, dark humor, and straight-up tragedy in a way that feels kinda uncomfortable but also really good? The whole film has this gloomy vibe, and almost every character is morally off in some way. There’s a lot of cheating, lying, weird power games — all that messy human stuff.
You can tell Lang knew exactly what he was doing, even though people don’t hype up his Hollywood years enough. Edward G. Robinson, Joan Bennett, and Dan Duryea absolutely carry the story — they make the whole thing hit way harder than you expect.
At its heart, the movie’s really about someone slowly losing themselves — all that disappointment, desire, and emotional damage piling up. It’s based on the French story La Chienne from 1931, and yeah, the cool part is it’s in the public domain now, so you can watch it totally free.
📚 Plot Summary
Christopher Cross (Edward G. Robinson) is an insecure middle-aged cashier and amateur painter who is languishing in a joyless marriage. One night he saves a young slick-looking girl, Kitty (Joan Bennett), who appears to be being attacked, nor realizing that it is her boyfriend Johnny, manipulative of her, who is the person attacking her. Kitty takes the bait and pretends that Chris is a wealthy artist as Johnny wants him to squeeze money out of the unsuspecting man.
Chris loses his vision because of desire and artistic dreams and takes money to take care of Kitty, even renting her a studio where they can keep a love nest. However, soon Kitty and Johnny use his paintings and sell them in her name. The fraud increases as does the emotional breakdown of Chris.
When Chris eventually gets to know the truth, the world he is in crashes. In an outrageous ending, he kills Kitty in the uncontrollable rage of jealousy. But justice has got it wrong: Johnny is found guilty and executed, and Chris, having the burden of guilt and being washed out of the artistic world, loses his mind and falls into the shadows.
