Full Plot Summary
In Popeye the Sailor Meets Sinbad the Sailor (1936 film), the film begins with a scene on Sinbad bragging on his treasure island: I am the most remarkable, extraordinary fellow! and amongst imprisoned beasts of savageness, such as lions and snakes. His giant Rokh roc and two-headed giant Boola are guarding his realm.
Popeye passes by along with Olive Oyl and burger selling Wimpy singing his theme. Noticing beautiful Olive, Sinbad orders Rokh to kidnap her and destroys the ship owned by Popeye. Popeye and Wimpy head toward the shore; Wimpy starts his running joke, as he runs after a duck with a meat grinder, but loses his burger.
Sinbad makes Olive dance on his gunpoint as he crows his supremacy. Popeye comes in and it begins a battle of strength trials. The first one is that Popeye struggles with the huge roc and knots its neck. Then, there is the two-headed Boola (Three Stooges parody), who is eye-poked and flattened.
Lastly, Sinbad and Popeye fight one-on-one and Sinbad almost defeats the latter until Popeye takes his spinach. “Open sez me!” unleashes super-strength: Popeye flattens Sinbad into pretzels, smashes monsters and saves Olive. Winning, he asserts that he is the greatest, outstanding guy. as the island cheers. The duck which is owned by Wimpy takes the last burger.
Genre and Key Themes
Popeye the Sailor Meets Sinbad the Sailor (1936) is a fantasy adventure cartoon, which combines the Arabian Nights mythology with the muscle-fantasy formula of Popeye. Since it is a Color Special, it does not stick to brevity.
Key themes include:
- Power in planning: Spinach makes of weakness undefeated force.
- Heroic rescue: Papaeye also risks the monsters because of Olive only.
- Vain competition: The ego of Sinbad falls in the modest strength of Popeye.
- Underdog wins: Little sailor defeats monsters and heroes.
- Loyalty to comics: The burger addiction to Wimpy offers relief 24 hours.
These make Popeye the Sailor Meets Sinbad the Sailor a movie beyond regular shorts.

Movie Review
Popeye the Sailor Meets Sinbad the Sailor (1936) is an eyewonder and a masterpiece in entertainment.
- Voices: Popeye of Mercer and Olive, frantic, and Wimpy, mumbling, are the best parts of their voices. Sinbad by Wickie is just the bombastic.
- Animation: The multiplane and 3D sets of Fleischer give the effect of depth that is breathtaking- the treasure cave leaps out of the screen. Butterfight battles and chokes are the most skilled.
- Direction: Dave Fleischer fills 16 minutes with epic scope, and the combination of action, songs, and humor in the film is harmonious.
- Plot: the same spinach payoff, however, Arabian monsters and Sinbad fight bring new excitement. Duck chase Wimpy ties comic ribbon.
Obsolete aspects such as stereotypes are present, yet animation quality overpowers them. It is necessary as a free classic movie and public domain movie.
