🎞️ Overview

Behind the Screen (1916) is the 57 th movie of Charlie Chaplin, who was in the peak of his Mutual Film period. This little comedy does not only present Chaplin and his usual slapstick genius, but also a backstage view of early Hollywood, full of pratfalls, set anarchy and social innuendo.

Shot within a film studio, the action revolves around Chaplin as a hapless stagehand, David, who gets to juggle props, take away the wrath of other stagehands, to fall in love with a disguised actress. It is a movie of the future, with the mention of gender identity in early Hollywood and a gay snickack (but subtle and yet daring in its time).

📝 Plot Summary

David ( Chaplin ) is an overworked studio stage hand that works on behalf of several employees under the looming eye of a bulky and supervising boss, Goliath (Eric Campbell). With set pieces colliding, props flying and tempers running, a mob of unsatisfied stagehands is on the verge of striking.

In comes Edna Purviance, who wants to be an actress. She is rejected by casting agents so she dresses up as a man to work behind the scenes as a fellow stagehand. David later learns her secret and love sprouts.

In one of the most renowned scenes, David kisses the boy (Edna in disguise) and is observed by one of the other stagehand who is left believing David was kissing a man. In retaliation the character reacts with feminine mannerisms so over-the-top that David gives him a kick, which he subsequently does humorously, in response to the queerly-coded comedy of the situation.

Vid. Why Behind the Screen Still Matters.

⁊ Early Movie Industry Parody – A comic view at Hollywood life before it was Hollywood.

Gender Play – the cross-dressing plot of Edna Purviance was a risky one at the time.

🌈 Historic LGBTQ+ Moment — This is one of the earliest on-screen gay jokes ever in Hollywood history that was addressed in The Celluloid Closet.

🧱 Chaplin at His Peak — This short of the Mutual period is full of the creative tricks and accurately timed jokes that brought Chaplin to the legends.

📚 Did You Know?

Vito Russo used homosexuality as a topic in the movie in an early way that made it part of his breakthrough book, The Celluloid Closet.

In later works, Chaplin repurposed and rethought many of the gags of this movie, perfecting his slapstick.

It was published November 13, 1916, and was one of the final films Chaplin worked on with Mutual before he transferred on to larger creativity (and larger budgets).
