Till The Clouds Roll By (1946) is a musical biopic and Technicolor musical, a biopic of composer Jerome Kern, produced by MGM and now in the public domain. It blends melodramatic life story with opulent performances of the songs by Kern by star-studded cast such as Robert Walker, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, June Allyson, Lena Horne amongst many others.

Till The Clouds Roll By (1946) Movie background

The movie was filmed under the guidance of Richard Whorf and produced by Arthur Freed and premiered in late 1946 with a duration of approximately 2 hours 12 minutes. MGM musical stars make brief appearances in cameo-style song sequences that are backed by Robert Walker as Jerome Kern with the support of Van Heflin, Lucille Bremer, Dorothy Patrick and a large ensemble.

Kern himself was also a participant in initial production but passed away in 1945 before it was finished and the completed film is somewhat in his honor. The film Till The Clouds Roll By later became public domain when MGM did not renew their copyright, and it began to circulate in the home video market and various film archives such as Internet Archive.

Full plot summary

The story begins at the 1927 staging of Show Boat in Broadway, showing a truncated performance of the first act of the show and a few of the standard numbers. Following the performance, Kern gets out of the theater and starts narrating his life to a taxi driver, which turns into the framing device of the film flashbacks.

Kern also remembers how he fought to earn his mark as a fledgling songwriter, how he became close to his mentor James I. Hessler and how he was attracted to the daughter of his Sally Hessler. Momentum in his career comes in a move to London when his music in a revue attracts the attention of producer Charles Frohman and a love affair with Eva Leale develops into love although he should be in New York.

Back in the U.S., Kern has hits with such shows as The Girl from Utah, Oh, Boy!, Leave It to Jane and Sally, all of which have musical set pieces such as Till the Clouds Roll By, Look for the Silver Lining and other standards all represented on screen. Sally Hessler matures over the years and requests Kern to aid her entry into the show business but professional compromises and disappointments strain their relationship and ultimately pushes her away.

The mid part is the continuation of the sorrow that Kern is experiencing, Jim Hessler having died, and trying to locate Sally; without success, he is ingeniously blocked. His inspiration is revived with the help of a visit by lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II who introduces him to the novel Show Boat, and he realizes that Sally is singing at a Memphis club and they reunite.

The story is set back in Hollywood in the last act when Kern is watching the adaptation of his work to the screen and he notices Sally portrayed in a new musical created on the basis of his songs. The movie winds up with a spectacular reprise of Kern hits on Broadway and Hollywood finishing with a climax headlined by Frank Sinatra singing OL Man river in a star tribute.

Genre and key themes

Till The Clouds Roll By is a musical jukebox musical, designed on the song catalog of Jerome Kern, instead of historical accuracy. It is part of the series of composer biographies of MGM, which were accompanied by movies about Rodgers and Hart, Kalmer and Ruby, and Sigmund Romberg.

Key themes include:

Artistic drive and persistence: The story of Kern as a struggling songwriter to a successful person in Broadway and Hollywood is one that shows the perseverance that is needed to make a living as an artist.

Mentorship and family: The case with Jim and Sally Hessler emphasizes the impact of the mentor and surrogate families on personal and professional life.

Memory and nostalgia: The flashback format and final montage transform the life story of Kern into a nostalgic voyage into the past life of the popular song in America during the first half of the 20 th century.

It could also be seen as indicative of the biography of studio-era Hollywood that put more emphasis on emotion lines and spectacle than on fact, making the movie more likely an MGM showcase than a portrait of Kern.

Why it’s still worth watching

The film is important due to its thick representation of the traditional Kern songs by some of the largest MGM musical stars of the 1940s. The audiences get to watch Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Lena Horne, June Allyson, Kathryn Grayson, Dinah Shore etc. in properly designed set pieces whereby their voices and Technicolor production values are displayed.

Since Till The Clouds Roll By is in the public domain, it may be viewed and reposted at will on websites such as Internet Archive, and other websites that specialize in showing classic-movies, which makes it currently one of the most easily accessible MGM musicals. It is also a glimpse of the way the Hollywood of the mid-century preserved the history of Broadway, which is interesting to the film history enthusiasts as well as the lovers of musical theater and performances of the Golden Age stars.
