A Burlesque on Carmen (1915) – Chaplin Mocks Opera with Slapstick Genius

In the year 1915, Charles Chaplin transformed the intense drama of Carmen into a comical view with A Burlesque on Carmen, a short film that satirizes operatic melodrama and magnificence of Hollywood. This was Chaplin’s thirteenth and last movie for Essanay Studios, coming out just as he was leaving the company that had played an important role in the start of his career.

At the time, Carmen was a hot property — with dramatic versions by both Cecil B. DeMille and Raoul Walsh hitting screens that same year. Chaplin’s satire was highly evident on DeMille’s principal film. He used mock sets, costumes, and tone to make his point.

📚 Plot Summary

Chaplin plays “Darn Hosiery,” a bumbling guard stationed at a border outpost. When the seductive Carmen (played by Chaplin regular Edna Purviance) is sent to distract him so a band of gypsies can smuggle goods, things quickly spiral into absurdity. Carmen’s sultry tactics are no match for Chaplin’s cluelessness — and neither are her sharp knives.

Classic silent-era slapstick comes next, which is gnarly and exaggerated in the drama and incorporates misunderstandings and sight gags still fresh even after more than a hundred years. The finale sees Chaplin giving his peculiar kind of poetic justic—through falls, not fireams.
