Shanghaied (1915) – Chaplin takes off with Mayhem and Mirth.

Published in October 1915, Shanghaied is 46th movie by Charlie Chaplin and another slapstick success of his Essanay Studios. Laden with seafarer nonsense and Chaplin physical comedy with which he made his name, the movie has The Tramp caught in an unscrupulous insurance claim on a rickety old steam.

It is not a simple seafaring comedy — Shanghaied shows Chaplin working out the comic timing and the touching heart which was to be the main trait of his further masterpieces. It is quick (less than 30 min), humorous and full of sea piracy.

📚 Plot Summary

One of its ship owners is a crook who intends to scuttle the ship so that he can get the insurance money. To ensure that it sets off with the right number of crew to make the sabotage appear accidental, he colludes with the captain to Shanghai some unlucky people – recruit them against their will.

In comes Charlie: a tramp, who is in love with the daughter of the ship owner. He is fooled into aiding with the kidnapping of the crew only to get recruited himself! In the meantime, the daughter elopes to monitor the lover.

Anarchy prevails on the storm-bound ship with Charlie bumbling his way through his kitchen work, serving meals in the storm and inadvertently sabotaging the insurance plan. There are slapstick, swinging doors, and spinning plates, it is pure Chaplin.

🧠 Why It Matters

A Comedic Sea Adventure: Shanghaied: The movie is a land-based Chaplin mingling with a nautical scene which is very rare in Chaplin films full of rocking ships and hurricane comedies.

Romance & Rebellion: The movie also foreshadows more serious feelings as The Tramp falls in love with a daughter of a villain, which Chaplin would return to later and expand into his more lengthy productions.

Free & Public Domain: Shanghaied is now in the public domain and it can freely be watched more than 100 years.
