Invasion of the Bee Girls (1973) – Death by Desire in This Sci-Fi Cult Classic

Invasion of the Bee Girls (invasion of the bee girls in the UK) is a science fiction/horror/sexploitation film that was released in 1973 as a unique combination of all three aspects. It is the first film screenplay of Nicholas Meyer, who went on to direct Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and was directed by Oscar-winner Denis Sanders.

It is a B-movie masterpiece, as it traces a weird chain of male fatalities, which are connected to mysterious and hyper-sexual insect-like females with superhuman powers. The reason of the death is neither natural, nor even human, as one of the local research laboratories has a secret experiment.

📚 Plot Summary

The case only becomes stranger once government scientist John Grubowsky is found dead as a result of an alleged sexual exhaustion. More men begin to die by the same strange hands — sound, lusty, and apparently… orgasmed to death.

A team led by Special Agent Neil Agar (William Smith) is called in to probe. Every indication is that it is near the Brandt Research Institute where secret biological research is underway.

It is a sinister plot, beautiful women are mutated into a new breed known as the Bee Girls, a fatal kind of woman who is created to entice men, to sleep with them and to kill them in the act. Becoming insect-human hybrids, these femme fatales are changing with lethal results and lead a sinister life, headed by the mysterious doctor, Susan Harris.

The movie is moving toward a campy and surreal conclusion where Agar as an agent stops the Bee Girl epidemic by racing against time as there are stings and seduction and sci-fi craziness of the finale.

🧠 Why It Matters

Cult Appeal: Typical of an exploitation horror of the 1970s, combining sensuality with science fiction in a manner that the B-movies could not afford to do.

Early Work by Nicholas Meyer: The first screenplay written by Meyer prior to his fame as a writer of Star Trek was a madcap and unpolished mash-up of genres.

Public Domain Status: This weird science sci-horror is open access to those who appreciate the old school and cult films.
