A Fairy Tale in the Classic Comedy Style

Jack and the Beanstalk (1952) is a joint venture between two of the most renowned entertainers of all times to reinterpret a favorite fairy tale in a humorous way: Bud Abbott and Lou Costello. Slapstick humor, musical numbers, and fairy tale storytelling make the film a way to transport the audience into the world of whimsicality where giants, golden hens and magic beans are in the center stage. These are the bright combination of sepia and Cinecolor which makes this eternal story alive and the most visual characteristic of Abbott and Costello.

What Happens in the Movie?

Jack (Lou Costello) and Mr. Dinkle (Bud Abbott) are jobless guys that take over a babysitting position that leads to a bizarre dream sequence. While reading the Jack and the Beanstalk story to a smart kid, Jack falls asleep and when he wakes up, he is the main character of the fairy tale in the land of a greedy Giant.

In his dream, Jack is forced to sell the only remaining property of his family, a cow named Henry to a suspicious butcher to get magic beans. At night, when a giant beanshow sprouts up, Jack, with the help of Dinklepuss (his idealized version of Mr. Dinkle) climbs up it to save the captured Princess, Prince, and even the cow. Jack finds a way out of the castle of the Giant with the assistance of a nice housekeeper and the legendary hen that lays golden eggs to rescue the day and cuts the beanstalk.

Jack wakes up in the real world, however, only to be shoved back into the dream realm again.

Why This Version Remains Charisma Today

This version is not just one to watch due to its level of humor and musicality, but through its production background. The companies of Abbott and Costello, Costello in Exclusive Productions and Abbott in Woodley Productions, were unrelated and produced it independently since Universal Pictures was not willing to make a color film. The dream framing effect, the sepia-to-color transformation, and the pleasant animation provide some layer of storytelling that was not common in the 1950s comedies.

It is also among the most family-friendly aspects of the two: the balance between laughs and fantasy makes it look appealing to both children and adults.
