Royal Wedding (1951) – A Whimsical Musical Amid Royal Romance

Set against the excitement of the real-life royal wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip, Royal Wedding (1951) brings old-school Hollywood charm, classic song-and-dance numbers, and one of Fred Astaire’s most iconic performances — yes, the one where he dances on the ceiling.

Under the direction of Stanley Donen ( Singin’ in the rain ) in his first solo direction, this is a musical comedy that pits Astaire and Jane Powell as a Broadway brother-sister duo who bring their show to London – and find love on both sides of the Atlantic.

📚 Plot Summary

Tom and Ellen Bowen (Fred Astaire and Jane Powell) is an aspiring brother-sister band performing duet, Every Night at Seven, which is a hit show on the Broadway. As the performance is summoned to play at London during the celebrations of the marriage of Princess Elizabeth, the duo embarks on the journey to England.

Ellen also falls in love with Lord John Brindale, a handsome British nobleman on the trip. In the meantime, Tom also makes a new friend and falls in love with the dancer Anne Ashmond, who has a complex love life in London. The more rehearsal and royal scenes increase, the more there are comedy misunderstandings, love entanglement, and musical show-stoppers.

When the royal couple is ready to get married, the Bowens have plans of their own nuptials.
