A Bold Film or Exploitation?

Child Bride (1938), also retitled Child Brides, Child Bride of the Ozarks, and Dust to Dust, is a highly controversial drama, which hoped to oversee the evils of child marriage in the rural settings of that era. Produced with Harry Revier in the directors chair and not belonging to the Hollywood system, the film caused a lot of debate in the country because of its taboo theme and sensationality, including the infamous nude swimming scene of a minor. The film is considered an educational piece, but it is still notorious due to its shocking visuals and exploitation of the market.

Storyline Summary

The story is set in the remote town of Ozarks and it is the story about Miss Carol (Diana Durrell), a passionate schoolteacher who wants to stop the age-old custom of child marriage. She is met with strong opposition by the local men, especially, Jake Bolby (Warner Richmond) who attempts to hush up her by using force.

Meanwhile, young Jennie Colton (Shirley Mills), just 12 years old, becomes a target of Bolby’s manipulation. After Jennie’s father dies, Bolby pressures her mother into allowing him to marry the girl, using threats and coercion. Though the marriage is later revealed to be illegal due to a recent law change, Bolby’s intentions are clear—and disturbing.

Ultimately, Jennie is rescued from her fate when Angelo the dwarf (Angelo Rossitto) intervenes with a shotgun, ending Bolby’s predatory pursuit.

Key Cast Performances

  • Shirley Mills as Jennie Colton -Mills was in her first screen appearance which was later followed by the Grapes of Wrath (1939).
  • Diana Durrell as Miss Carol -The schoolteacher on a crusade against injustice.
  • Warner Richmond as Jake Bolby – The villainous man seeking to marry a child.
  • Bob Bollinger as Freddie Nulty – Jennie’s innocent companion.
  • Angelo Rossitto as Angelo – A memorable character actor who appeared in films for decades.

Why This Film Still Raises Eyebrows

Child Bride is one of the most infamous examples of “educational exploitation” cinema. While its stated intent was to raise awareness of the lack of child marriage laws, its execution—particularly the extended nude swimming scene of a pre-teen—has led to ongoing ethical debates.

It would circumvent the Motion Picture Production Code at the time by positioning itself as a social commentary, and releasing on its own. The critics such as those of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 have described it as one of the most unsettling movies ever thought of satiring.

This scandalous reaction to the film has contributed to it staying within the exploitation film circuit over the years, although it is now more than likely to be condemned as exploitive films regardless of the social message it carries.
