Full Plot Summary
The move begins in crass seaside cabaret. Charlie Chaplin is a waiter who works with drunken patrons. He splashes, evades punches and can hardly maintain an employment with the rough cafe owner.
Beautiful Mabel Normand passes by alongside her rich parents. Charlie sees her and attempts to impress her with finery. Calamity befalls her when her jealous boyfriend appears. The mad pursuit overflows to the street where Mabel loses her handkerchief.
Charlie picks it and devises a plan. He breaks the garden party of the family impersonating a high-society Greek Ambassador. He adorns himself in his waiter tuxedo and completely endears himself to the parents of Mabel with his poor English and farfetched bowing.
The deception works at first. Charlie fathers about, proposes to Mabel and even leads a toast. However, it goes wrong when the actual boyfriend of Mabel comes, aroused by the ambassador. Awakening–the boyfriend acknowledges that Charlie is merely the cabaret waiter.
Chaos erupts. The boyfriend strikes out with fists. Charlie retaliates using chairs, trays and pratfalls. Guests of the party have dispersed and Mabel observes the humorous situation. The real self of the waiter is revealed in the fight.
The short is in typical Keystone style, with wild pursuits and everybody piling up in a heap. The great act of Charlie runs terribly wrong and he runs off as the garden party falls into farce.

Caught in a Cabaret (1914) provides a very interesting insight into the early career of Chaplin. His uncultured talent shines through the madness of the pace of Keystone seen by the fans.
Even in this primitive version, Chaplin stars in a physical comedy which amazes. The indicating signs of genius are his elastic face and balletic pratfalls. Mabel Normand is very confident in directing and the action is tight with just 12 minutes.
The plot is as old as Keystone standards, impersonation, jealousy, big fight. There are gags that are repetitive according to modern standards. The values of production indicate the bounds of the time, simple sets, overdone acting.
But there is the chemistry between Chaplin and Normand. Her timing is the perfect contrast to his disorder. Being a free domain movie, it is a must have free classic movie to people who love silent movies that cannot miss the Caught in a Cabaret (1914) full movie.
Great to laugh at and Chaplin biology. Not his finest perhaps, but of utmost importance.
