Bloody Pit of Horror (Il Boia Scarlatto), a Gothic horror movie of 1965, is characterized by the excessive dramatization, torture devices, and the Italian horror film characterized by cult and camp. The movie is very much influenced by the works of Marquis de Sade and mixes the typical horror motifs with the old-style pulp sleaze.
Under Massimo Pupillo, and featuring Mickey Hargitay, the film is an outrageous Euro-horror which has become a cult film because of the bizarre storyline, the bombastic visuals and the memorable villain, the Crimson Executioner.
🧩 Plot Summary
A group of models and photographers sneak into a old castle in Italy to shoot the horror horror covers of books. They believe that the castle is deserted–and they are mistaken.
The castle is owned by Travis Anderson (Mickey Hargitay), an ex-reclusive actor who has a dark background. When he finally agrees to keep the crew on board, the ghost of a dead sadist, the Crimson Executioner, is possessed by him. Convinced that it is his task to deliver impurity in order to punish it, he subjects the guests under a series of detailed, brutal tortures.
Bloody Pit of Horror is a horror film and a pulpy exploitation spectacle with its traps that are eerie, costumes that are bizarre, and dialogues that are pulpy.

Bloody Pit of Horror was not well received, and was critically criticized as being trashy, but as entertainment, it got attention due to its extravagant instruments of torture, lack of clothing, and the overboard performance of Mickey Hargitay.
Incognito Cinema Warriors XP riffed it in 2009 and it has continued to uphold its enduring worth in a so-bad-it-saw-good horror film.
