The Amazing Mr. X (1948), also known as The Spiritualist, is a chilling film noir thriller on trickery and supernatural. This is a film shot by John Alton that has a brilliant cinematography with the star of Turhan Bey, Lynn Bari, and Cathy O’Donnell wandering mystery and illusion.

The Spiritualist (1948) or the The Amazing Mr. X is a film noir film directed by Bernard Vorhaus and shot by John Alton. Similar to Nightmare Alley (1947), the present film narrates about a fake spiritualism racket.

The movie is also given an extensive mention in the popular book by Alton titled Painting with Light (1949) on the art of cinematography.

The movie is based on Turhan Bey, Lynn Bari, Cathy O-Donnell, and Richard Carlson. Eagle-Lion Films initially had a contract signed with Carole Landis who was to play the role of Bari, however, Landis died due to suicide only a few days before the shooting commenced.


📖 Plot

Christine Faber (Lynn Bari) believes two years after the death of her husband that she hears her dead husband (Donald Curtis) calling out to her in the surf one night. Very shortly she runs into an unknown man named Alexis (Turhan Bey) who appears to know all about her.

By the continued haunting, Christine and her younger sister (Cathy O’Donnell) end up in the strange world of Alexis, when it seems that he, as well, is lost in a web of lies deeper than he first thought.

During previews, the viewers are said to have been accidentally amused by the movie and consequently laugh at various scenes.
