About the Film
The General dropped in 1926 and somehow still cuts clean, like the film refuses to age properly. Keaton directed it, splitting duties with Clyde Bruckman, though the pacing and the weirdly precise chaos feel so much like Keaton that the shared credit almost blurs. I keep looking at certain scenes and thinking, yeah, that’s his hand on the wheel.
You get historical adventure woven with stunt work that looks risky enough to make me pause for a second. Then there’s the small thread of romance, loose but charming, and Keaton’s stone-faced style holding the center like he’s daring the world to blink first. I think the mix works because nothing feels padded — just movement, grit, and that odd Keaton calm in the middle of it all.
Cast
- Buster Keaton as Johnnie Gray
- Marion Mack as Annabelle Lee
- Glen Cavender as Captain Anderson
- Frederick Vroom as Confederate General
The film was made in the period of maximum creative freedom of Keaton, and nowadays, it is regarded as one of the greatest accomplishments in the history of cinema, though it was not recognized then.
Full Plot Summary
Johnnie Gray, a locomotive engineer of the Confederate South, is in love with two things:
- His train “The General”
- and his lovelove Annabelle Lee.
Johnnie attempts to join the Civil War but he is denied on the grounds that the Army thinks he will be more useful as an engineer. Annabelle, and her family wrongly believe that he had declined to fight and she ends their relationship.
Shortly after, the General is stolen by Union spies – and Annabelle on board. Johnnie is heartbroken and determined enough to make a daring cross enemy lines salvage effort to save his locomotive and the woman he loves.
What follows is cinema history:
- High-speed train chases
- Brave stunts over trestles, rivers, and locomotives
- Johnnie accidentally sparking a battle while trying to escape
- A dramatic bridge collapse
- A triumphant return with enemy officer captured
His brave deeds eventually pay off as he is honored, given a rank, and Annabelle admires him all with his cool and detached demeanor.
