It was an adventure film that was released in 1946 and it is a blend of mystery, suspense, and coded intrigue and all comes in a small package of 72 minutes. Rathbone also performs well along with Nigel Bruce as the friendly Dr. Watson that established him as the screen icon of Holmes in generations to come.
🎬 Plot Summary
In Dartmoor Prison, a convict conceals the whereabouts of stolen printing plates of the Bank of England in three music boxes – all playing just a slightly different variation of the Swagman. These boxes are being auctioned, and this is what creates an accidental deadly treasure hunt.
An advanced and threatening lady – Patricia Morison – heads a gang that is bent on recovering all the three boxes. Clothed in disguise and wily, she is even more clever than Holmes in one of their first meetings.
Before the gang breaks the secret code stolen in the tune and causes mayhem by counterfeiting official British money, Holmes and Watson have to retrieve the last box.
