🎬 Classic Western with a Heart

Angel and the Badman (1947) has the unusual combination of traditional shoot-’em -up Western, combined with emotionally arousing romance and philosophical reflection. John Wayne plays a role of Quirt Evans, a notorious gunslinger whose angry life changes direction when he is adopted by a Quaker family of pacifists. This movie was the first time Wayne worked as a producer, and it is also interesting due to the reflective interpretation of redemption, love, and change in the Old West by its writers and directors, including one of Wayne’s longtime collaborators, James Edward Grant.

🌵 Plot Summary

Having been shot in a gun battle, Quirt Evans (John Wayne) falls on the farm of a peaceful Quaker family. Even their daughter, Penelope (Gail Russell), is compassionate and patient in nursing him back to health. Quirt is attracted to the kindness of Penny and her family with its peaceful ideals and this is in contrast to his violent past.

But trouble isn’t far behind. Quirt’s old rivals, Laredo Stevens (Bruce Cabot) and Hondo Jeffries, his former competition are after Quirt. Quirt is torn between his gunslinging instincts and a growing love of Penny, and is in a moral dilemma.

As Penny takes a critical illness, Quirt almost returns to his past to avenge. But here the hand of fate–and the unalterable Quaker principles–steps in very unexpectedly. During the final moments of the climax, when Quirt is in danger of being killed, he opts to shoot and kill instead of peace and love and gives up his rifle, and goes to a promising future with Penny.
