Full Plot Summary
The film Dr. Kildare Strange Case 1940 takes us back to Blair General Hospital where young Dr. James Kildare Jimmy is still in his training under the watch of old diagnostician Dr. Leonard Gillespie. Jimmy is a person of talent and idealism, yet he is still a struggling financially and it is the reason why he is unable to offer a proposal to get married to the lady he loves, nurse Mary Lamont.
A rival in love and in surgery
The new character in Blair General is Dr. Gregory Lane, a brilliant and scandalized brain surgeon. Lane has lost a number of patients in the operating table recently. The series of murders has wrecked his self-esteem and spoiled his reputation and he is now afraid of case involving risk.
Lane is also soon introduced as the competitor to Jimmy with Mary. He is charming and accomplished, and he does not share Jimmy and his financial concerns, and he can afford to provide Mary with the financial security that Jimmy believes he cannot afford at present. Mary sees the interest of Lane and she may still love Kildare however she gradually loses hope of ever getting him to marry her.
In the meantime, Jimmy is given an easy research position at the highly esteemed Messinger Institute by the learned Dr. “Egghead” Squires. The job would resolve his financial troubles and provide him with a decent career. It would also mean saying goodbye to Gillespie whom he holds in high esteem. Jimmy, who is agonising, rejects the offer and decides to remain at Blair General which leaves Mary and his family shocked seeing him giving up the financial security.
The fractured‑skull patient
In the next moment Jimmy and Lane have been given a tough case an unknown man was in an accident and has sustained a serious fracture on his skull and he requires brain surgery. Due to his recent setbacks, Lane is so frightened by working any more that he requests Kildare to replace him.
Jimmy, who is aware of how Lane should recover his confidence, declines. He tells Lane that he is the better surgeon and he urges Lane-almost bullies him- into doing the surgery. Lane undertakes the delicate process at the bequest of Gillespie.
The operation is technically a success: the patient manages to survive the surgery. However, on waking up, he is characterized by acting in a weird, bloody and crazy manner which indicates a form of apparent insanity. Kildare does not believe, however. Upon seeing the man, later being a businessman by the name Henry Adams, who disappeared five years ago in the life of his wife, Jimmy feels that the case of mental illness predated the accident and the operation. In case it is so, the patient was not legally or ethically in the right to blame Lane.
In order to demonstrate it, Jimmy develops a risky scheme. He is interested in subjecting Adams to the recently introduced insulin shock therapy a genuine psychiatric therapy of the time against some psychotic disorders. The approach consists of administering repeated high doses of insulin to put the patient into a controlled coma followed by reviving the patient with glucose and saline, in an effort to have the shocks disrupt the psychosis.
This type of experimental treatment, however, is not permissible to the approval of hospital rules or senior doctors. Jimmy is aware that in case he is not right, he might end up killing Adams and ruining his career and that of Lane. However, he actually does it in secret since he is convinced of his diagnosis.

The movie ends with glimmering professional and personal prospects of Kildare. He has remained faithful to Gillespie, assisted a fellow physician, solved a mysterious case, and was able to summon the heart to commit himself to his lover.

Movie Review
The film Strange Case 1940 which belongs to the Dr. Kildare series provides entertainment value to viewers who enjoy classic studio-style television shows through its combination of character relationships and hospital suspense and medical information and personal conflict.
Lew Ayres remains an attractive star in Jimmy Kildare. His act is neither too juvenile nor too serious, and his encounters with Lionel Barrymore in his rough and humorous Dr. Gillespie are among the best parts of the movie. Barrymore is in a wheelchair with the real life arthritis and offers Gillespie a dose of curmudgeonly and sincere heart that makes his mentorship seem authentic and worthwhile to observe.
