⚔️ Overview
The Mark of Zorro (1920) is the initial excellent silent adventure film where Douglas Fairbanks acted the role that created the genre of swashbuckers. Fairbanks adapted the screenplay alongside and produced the picture under the story of a Johnston McCulley entitled The Curse of Capistrano (1919) and was produced under Douglas Fairbanks Pictures Corporation. It was also the first film to be sold by United Artists which was a firm that Fairbanks started with Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin and D. W. Griffith.
The film established many conventions of the masked avenger, flashy swordplay, bold adventure, and romance mixed with justice that the masked avenger would set up, and gave rise to many more of the masked-avenger films (1940, 1974) and countless masked-avenger stories.
🎭 Plot Summary
Yet Don Diego Vega appears to be an unambitious foppish son of a rich ranchero, but has a courageous alter ego; Señor Zorro (or Mr. Fox): a masked avenger, who defends oppressed peasants against the corrupted officials. Don Diego is knocking around at the door of Lolita Pulido when Zorro is winning her admiration with fairy-tale adventures and escapades.
When Zorro slices the faces of the villainous men with his insignia Z, the war gains more momentum with Governor Alvarado and the wicked Captain Juan Ramon. At the thrilling climax Don Diego removes the mask, and turns the people and the army against the corrupt government, removes the governor and carries Lolita off as his bride which makes it very clear that the effete fiancee was an undercover swashbucking hero the entire time.
